About the area
Torrevieja was originally a salt-mining and fishing village, as it is located between the Sea and two large salt lakes (Las Salinas), which give Torrevieja a healthy microclimate. Nowadays, it’s a bustling city with a lively atmosphere all year round (day and night) – but still much quieter and relaxed than Alicante and Benidorm.
Torrevieja has all the amenities you’d expect from a city (plenty of restaurants & bars, shops, boutiques, supermarkets, medical centres, banks, etc). La Mata market in a big, busy outdoor market in Torrevieja which happens every Wednesday and is a great place to pick up a bargain, selling everything from flamenco dresses to fruit and veg. Just under 1 mile outside of central Torrevieja, there is also an indoor market (which was established about 2 years ago), on Fridays, selling mainly fruit & vegetables & local produce.
