Teaching assistant Marie and IT manager Peter from Sussex, met 10 years ago and since then they have both shared the dream of buying a holiday home abroad. Now they feel there’s no time like the present to turn their dream into a reality and they’ve set their sights on the area around the Mar Menor. Leah Charles-King is tasked with finding them their dream property for their budget of £65,000 but will any of them hit the mark?
About the area
The best way to get to the Mar Menor in south eastern Spain is to fly into Murcia airport – which takes just over 2 and a half hours from the UK – and then it’s around half an hour’s drive. The Mar Menor, which translates as “lesser sea”, in relation to its huge neighbour the Mediterranean Sea is actually Europe’s largest salt water lagoon, separated from the Med by a 14 mile long strip of land called La Manga. The lagoon’s normally calm waters make it popular with watersports enthusiasts – and away from the sun sea and sand there are more than 20 golf courses in the surrounding area – and loads of places to enjoy a drink and a bite to eat after all that exercise!
