Western Madeira
What's the appeal?
Madeira is an island almost 700 miles south west of Portugal, there are direct flights to its airport from the UK taking about 4 hours. The island is actually the top of a volcano that rises 4 miles up from the Atlantic Ocean floor. As such, it’s famed for its landscapes – which range from mountainous forests, classified as World Heritage Sites, to beautiful pebbly beaches. As it’s volcanic, there’s hardly any sand here but there are a handful of superb man made sandy beaches. Today we’ll be searching along the West coast, which has white and terracotta towns dotting it’s hillsides and a long standing history of fishing. With year round sunshine and world famous wine to enjoy, it’s no wonder 1 and a half million tourists flock to this stunning spot each year.
