Property for Sale in Mar Menor
Hot Properties in Mar Menor
Where to find a property for sale in Mar Menor
The Mar Menor on the Costa Calida is a rather special part of Spain. Also known as ‘Little Sea’ it is a large natural lagoon which is six miles wide and more than 10 miles long. With waters that are about five degrees warmer than the Med, it’s a paradise for bathers, boaters and water sports fans, even in the winter.
Offering more than 300 annual days of sunshine, and an average temperature of 21°C, it’s easy to see why so many people love it. The area is very popular with home buyers who might seek to be based in one of the seaside villages - of which the most central is Los Alcazares - a golf resort, or in the world famous La Manga resort (link?).
So where to choose? Between the lagoon and the Mediterranean is a strip of land called La Manga del Mar Menor (the sleeve of the little sea). This sandbar is 22km long with a width that varies between 100 metres and 1, 200 metres. The deepest spot is only seven meters and the water temperature maintains an average of around 17°C.
All along the strip on both sides, there are beautiful beaches with white sands, rocky outcrops, marinas and watersport schools. A good selection of bars, cafes, restaurants, hotels and tourist shops line the road. There is a nice marina, Tomas Maestre Marina, where you can sit and watch the boats, or take a boat trip across the Mar Menor or out to the Med.
The whole of the lagoon has beaches that gently slope to the warm waters and with no waves or tides, it’s very popular with families. Police patrols and lifeguards can be found in the popular spots, which are kept very clean and there are also locations that offer mud therapy
Choose between the resorts of Los Alcázares, Santiago de la Ribera and the beach area of Lo Pagán in San Pedro del Pinatar for a base. There’s also golf at Roda Golf, or at the Polaris World resorts mentioned below.
You can buy bank repossessed apartments in the area for around €80,000, although most buyers here have a budget of around €200,000. For well within that, you might get a new-build townhouse on a development within walking distance of Los Alcázares, or apartments within 300 metres of the beach.
On the Mar Menor golf resort - one of several Polaris World resorts nearby, including Le Torre and Hacienda Riquelme - offers apartments from around €100,000, villas from €200,000.
This is a great area - very easily accessed from Región de Murcia International - that is affordable, fun and great for families. If you like the bright lights of the Costa Blanca it might not be for you but it’s a lot calmer for it.
