Where to find a property for sale in Albufeira
Back in 1970 when the creator of the world-famous Quinta do Lago arrived in the central Algarve the former fishing village of Albufeira was the liveliest spot on the coast - ‘a hippyish place with a few discos’.
Now, Albufeira is one of the busiest resorts of all and still is a lively spot to be sure. Why? It’s got great beaches, is a well-located plum in the centre of the Algarve - an easy half an hour from Faro airport - and it’s got dozens of restaurants and bars.
As a result of its popularity - it’s also got two golf courses close by - it was ranked as best location on the Algarve for rental income, according to some research A Place in the Sun did with one of the biggest online portals.
Its beaches are certainly a big part of the appeal. Praia dos Pescadores (Fishermen's’ Beach) is next to the old town of Albufeira, and close to some great seafood restaurants, as is Praia do Peneco, close to Avenida da Liberdade, a road with many souvenir shops, traditional pottery and gift items. On the west of town is the marina too, with bars, restaurants and boat trips on offer.
Praia da Oura is on the other (eastern) side of Albufeira, and is perhaps the most well-known, it’s also close to the famous “Strip” (Avenida Sá Carneira) that includes Libertos nightclub - a 30-year-old institution in Albufeira - and Blue Sky, another long-standing establishment, a restaurant famed for its traditional Portuguese dishes.
There are also good secluded beaches such as Praia da Coelha, Praia do Castelo, Praia do Evaristo, where you can see the large rock formations and little basins where children can safely enjoy the sea. There is are watersports available on some of the beaches, plus horseriding and of course, golf.
Tempted to buy a property? There are many reasonably affordable apartments on sale. You’re going to need around €80,000 for a small apartment in Albufeira, although you’ll need nearer €130,000 to €140,000 for one in a popular location or development, or with good views.
You will pay around €170,000 plus for one in the popular Balaia golf resort, for example, but then you might expect rental demand to be especially good there - and for a longer season. For a villa, you might do better to head 20 minutes inland to villages such as Paderne.
Albufeira suits buyers who seek a lively resort with great beaches, plenty to do and good possibility of attaining some rental income to help fund their holiday home.
