Where to find a property for sale in Limousin

Limousin is in the northwest of France and is one of the smallest regions in the country. Its familiar name derives from the regional capital, Limoges, and has strangely been taken worldwide to describe a type of vehicle… and a famous breed of beef cattle. You may be surprised to know that although the cattle do indeed originate from this region, the elongated cars do not!

There’s remarkable value for money but as with all of this vast bucolic heartland of diary farming and market towns - the least populated region in mainland France - but how far do you have to travel to the nearest airport? There is a reason why many homes in this region are not strongly in demand.

But it’s been growing in popularity because of its affordability and the fact it is now over-run by expats. It’s also been popular for people bringing over animals to run a business. The Limousin is as a farming area growing in popularity for the fact it is still very French, and it isn’t heavily populated, you can get lots of land and an incredible property for €300,000.

But it’s not all rustic farming and agriculture. For example, there’s Montmorillon, sitting on the river Gartempe, has a beautiful old town on a hill, famed for its bookshops, stationery shops and macarons. In the Haute-Vienne (also in the Limousin region and home to 4,608 Britons) areas close to its central hub of Limoges such as Bellac - a photogenic town with an ancient stone bridge and jazz festival every July – are popular. But near the medieval town of Rochechouart you are back to four-bedders for €100,000 to €200,000 - or a one-bed home for €60,000.

As mentioned previously, Creuse is fertile for cheap homes and you can get one in need of a little updating for €60,000 in locations such as the village of Felletin or the medieval town of Bourganeuf (within an hour from Limoges airport) where you can get a pretty, four-bedroom, blue-shuttered quintessential French home for €150,000.
