Fortaleza, Brazil
Fortaleza is the fifth largest city in Brazil with a population of over five million and the capital of the most northern state of Ceará. It has its own modern airport, Fortaleza International Airport, and transport in the city is excellent with taxi, bus and soon to be a new tram system – the airport is 30 minutes from the city and has just been improved and enlarged.
Getting there
Fortaleza from Europe has many options – Flights direct from Lisbon, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and London – flight time approx 6 hours and 30 mins.
Why go?
A bustling metropolis offering everything a world city should offer, including bars, restaurants catering for all types of food including European, Chinese, American and more – four- and five-star hotels, with many with views or located directly on the beach.
Tourists can visit Art Deco areas, historical areas including the famous Dragao de Mar and the many cinemas and theatre venues – on the outskirts of the city are located many resort areas including Aquiris, Morro Branco, Flesheiras – all beautiful villages with sea and beach.
A closer look: Pontal de Maceio, Fortim
Just two hours and 20 minutes from Fortaleza (115km) is located the picturesque fishing village of Pontal de Maceio. Surrounded by four separate beaches – access is by car, taxi or bus.
The area has seen rapid growth over the last number of years with tourist figures set to double between 2015 and 2025. Because of this demand and growth there is currently four more small hotels under construction, including one with a golf course.

What to do?
Pontal is a relaxing place and if you wish for just to chill by the swimming pool or take the short walk to one of the beaches, then this place is for you. If you require a little more action, then there is a vast range of activities to choose from. Pontal is the biggest place for kitesurfing in the entire area – surfers come from France and all over to take advantage of the conditions – but beach buggy rides are also popular and take in all the scenic areas of Pontal – horse riding is available daily during the full year too. There are also boat trips, banana boat excursions, and full-day fishing trips. Running and walking are most popular with a combination of beach and terrain tracks through the village. There are many restaurants, bars and beach barracas to choose from. If you wish to visit other areas close to Fortim, you can take in Parajuru, Canoe Cabrada and Aracati, the major shopping hub of the area and just 25km from Fortim.
Sunshine and beaches!
As mentioned, there are four beaches to choose from including Jaguribe beach, where the sea meets the river – very scenic and you can take a beer in the local restaurant and bar while there. The state of Ceará is located a few hours from the Equator with sunshine all year round (36 degrees).
