How often have you sat on a plane on your way back from holiday and wished you didn't have to head home? One Latvian airline is hoping to capitalise on this feeling by selling real estate in mid air.
airBaltic, which flies from Riga to 60 destinations across the world, has previously offered its passengers Mini Coopers alongside more traditional in-flight buys such as perfume and spirits, and is now getting into the estate agent game. Among the properties being offered are luxury apartments in the country's capital Riga and condos on Latvia's Lake Coast. All properties are being offered with extra discounts including discounted parking spaces or management fees paid for a year.
Interested parties can buy a voucher for 30 euros (£23), which the airline claims will save them up to 9,500 euros when they sign on the dotted line for a real estate purchase with a partner broker.
The airline recorded a loss of 100 million euros in 2011 and is expected to lose more than 50 million euros in 2012. It is hoping to recover some money through the sales of these big ticket items.
“After the success of our pilot project in high-value items, we want to go further. We are delighted to be the first airline in the world to offer real estate with guaranteed discounts for in-flight sale," commented Michael Grimme, airBaltic's Head of Sales and Marketing.
