A Chinese building firm is aiming to build the world's tallest tower in just 90 days, using the same methods that saw them erect a 30 storey building in just 15.
The proposed Sky City Tower, which is being constructed by Broad Sustainable Building, will reach 838 metres high (2749 feet 4⅛ inches), trumping Dubai's Burj Khalifa, currently the world's tallest building, by 10 metres. While full details of the tower's uses have yet to be released it is expected that Sky City will contain a mixture of business premises, shops and residences.
The speedy build time is due to the majority (95%) of the building being prefab, constructed in a factory off site. The tower will also consume less energy than other buildings of its size, thanks to extra thick walls which will provide insulation.
The company are currently awaiting approval from the Chinese authorities, but are "confident the government will green-light the project" by November, meaning that construction will be completed by January 2013.
However, others in the country are not so confident in the building's success. "Since the project is still pending, we have no comment on Sky City but it's very hard to believe that BSB will be able to build an 800-plus-meter skyscraper in such a short period of time," said Shen, a public relations officer for Gensler, the company that designed Shanghai Tower, currently on route to being China's tallest building.
