It’s an island with many archaeological sites, one of the most famous being “Portara” (the “Great Door”), which was part of the Temple of Apollo and its view of the sunset is a truly remarkable sight. Naxos is famous for its marble, which was used in ancient Olympia as well as the Acropolis in Athens. It also has a strong agricultural tradition, and visitors must try its famous potatoes and the local cheese, called “Arseniko Naxou”.
Naxos can be reached easily by ferry from Piraeus, Rafina (the two ports servicing Athens), as well as from the other islands in the Cyclades.
