Full Description

This property, which does requires renovation, is in an elevated position in the Comune of Fuscaldo (CS) in the locality of Fiorina, approx. 70km drive north from Lamezia Terme airport and 15 minutes from the train station at Paola.

From its elevated position the property of approx. 140sqm has lovely views towards the sea. The original part of the house dates to 1960’s. The ground level comprises 2 good sized rooms with external shared stairs leading to the upper level. On the upper level there are 3 rooms, 1 with balcony access and a bathroom. Externally there is an area for parking and approx. 150msq of land with a variety of fruit trees.
A separate entrance could be made so that each property has independent access and then internal stairs could be added.

Perched on a red rock ridge, with the mountain behind it and the sea in front, Fuscaldo overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea. A town built on stone, which was once an ancient defence bastion, because the houses, the churches and the narrow and winding streets are all made of stone. Confirming that the territory of Fuscaldo was inhabited in Roman times is the discovery, in recent centuries, of numerous tombs all containing coins and jewellery from the Roman era. Subsequent Lombard & Greek colonisation all add to the development of the town. The historic centre has remained almost unchanged over time in its Romanesque structure. The Piazza can be accessed either from a large staircase located in Corso Garibaldi or from the Porta di Juso, perhaps the oldest access since this gate immediately leads to the cliff.

The Marina had its first stable settlements near the Torre San Giorgio (1550), but a real urbanization took place in the second half of the 18th century. Many original buildings still exist and the seaside village has developed over time into a busy town with modern amenities required to render it a notable seaside destination.

The nearby town of Paola has a rich history dating back to the 4th Century BC and has had many influences and dominations over the years. The French occupied Paola around 1806 and destroyed the Sanctuary of St Francis following orders to supress religious orders. This has now been rebuilt and forms one of the most important destinations in the city for pilgrims and tourists alike. San Francis was born in Paola and the sanctuary is just one of the many churches that can be visited. There is also the Arch of San Francis located in the centre of the city marking its entrance. A newer modern part of the city has evolved over the years and Paola is now a busy town offering a variety of amenities: shops/boutiques, café bars, supermarkets, restaurants, grocers etc. There is also a weekly market offering products typical of the area. Local festivals are held during the year too. The coastline and beach front at Paola offer many activities and beach bars in the summer months.
Nearby towns of San Lucido offer the possibility to explore other activities and situated on the recently constructed coastline protection barriers are many beach bars and lidos during the summer months together with a sailing school.
Fuscaldo is conveniently positioned to explore the many traditional villages and to access the stunning National Park of La Sila where you can take advantage of the many year-round activities that are on offer, including walking, pony trekking, quad bikes and in the winter months, skiing. Other areas of archaeological interest are within easy reach and the museum housing the Bronzes of Riace is at Reggio Calabria.
