Full Description

Ref 68405Dd: A bit of history for a 15th century castle.
Dating from the fifteenth century, built on the model of the Gascon castles, with a main building and a pavilion topped with a pointed roof, it was modernised and enlarged before the First World War. The roof of the pavilion replaced by a terrace and a second pavilion, also with a terrace, was added to give more symmetry. This very beautiful ensemble occupies a privileged and non-floodable location on the left bank of the Garonne.
He belonged to the Dampierre family. There is a trace of it in the national archives in these terms: "Aymar de Dampierre was involved in the expedition of Marie-Caroline, Duchess of Berry (), in . Landing in Provence in April 1832 and disappointed by the failure of her attempt to uplift the cities of the South of France, the Duchess wanted, despite all advice to the contrary, to reach the Vendée. As the Dampierre family was divided between their castles of Plassac (Charente-Maritime), Vignau-en-Marsan (Landes) and Saumon-en-Gascogne (Lot-et-Garonne), Marie-Caroline de Berry first went to Le Saumon, but noticing the absence of the Dampierres, she went to the castle of Saint-Philip, in Saint-Nicolas de La Balerme (Lot-et-Garonne), to Guy de Dampierre (), cousin of the Marquis Aymar, in order to find out where to reach the latter"
It is interesting to note, however, that during the wars of the Fronde (a civil war that took place in France from 1648 to 1653, during the minority of Louis XIV, with the singular fact that several women played a decisive role), the castle of Saint-Philip was, during the siege of Caudecoste, transformed into a garrison. A part of the army, commanded by the Duke of Bellegarde, established its winter quarters there. The Marquis de Chouppes, who succeeded him, even had his headquarters in the castle. From there, he was in communication with the regiments lodged at Sauveterre, Layrac and Goulens
Now discover this sumptuous castle of 1200 m², located 10 kilometers from Agen, in an idyllic setting of 46752m² (fully enclosed) of greenery, on the banks of the Garonne.
